We had a great foxhunt on Saturday, August 28th. Weather was fantastic – 82o and sunny. There were 8 people on 5 teams (plus 3 people as the fox – our new friends from Toledo – Tom, KB8PAI, Jeanne, KB8TAT, and John, KD8NTR who won last month’s event). We also had another set of friends all the way from Grand Rapids – Tom, K8TB and his wife Sheila, K8AJ. Welcome to both of you. They shared some information on the Michigan Fox Hunter website and their Yahoo Group. I have joined that Group and will be passing along information I learn from them to the rest of our club members.
Congratulations to Mike, K8MLH who won this hunt in just 8.6 miles. The shortest route for this hunt was 5.2 miles. Second place was taken by our Grand Rapids friends, Tom, K8TB and Sheila, K8AJ in 9.3 miles. Third was Paul, W8PI who took 9.4 miles. This is a good example of why we need to record our mileage in tenths of a mile. Paul will be the fox for the next hunt as Mike took his place last time he won an event, but was unable to participate in the following month’s event due to work.
Similar to last month, Rita, WB8FBG, Nick, AF8CS, Dale, WA8EFK and Mike, N8KUF were not able to locate the fox in the 3-hour time limit (so close, yet so far, as Dale said), they still had a good time and enjoyed a great lunch with the rest of us at Benny’s.
Hope to see you all at the next hunt (mark your calendars for September 25th at 0900 local time at the American Red Cross on Dixie Highway) for this fun time and a time to practice our skills at hunting down what could be a stray signal that is interfering in our operating bands.

Ann Arbor One Day Class
We will be holding our next One-Day Tech Class at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, 220 E. Ann St. in downtown Ann Arbor on Saturday, September 18, 2010. Please pass this information along to anyone you know who might be interested in taking the class. The class begins at 9 am and will last until 3 pm. Immediately after the class, students will take the Technician Class license exam.
There is a suggested donation of $10 for the class (all proceeds help pay for our club station at the museum), and the license exam fee is $15.
GET A HEAD START!
To get a head start, prospective students should download a PDF file of the study guide available for no charge at http://www.kb6nu.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/2010_Tech_Study_Guide.pdf. By reading through the study guide and taking the online tests, students may even find that they can pass the test without taking the class.
GET ON THE LIST!
If you know someone who would like more information about the class, or to get on the mailing list to be notified by e-mail about the next class, have them contact me, Dan Romanchik, KB6NU: phone 734-930-6564, e-mail cwgeek@kb6nu.com.

Directional antenna
Attenuator
Map of Monroe County
Compass
Protractor and straight edge for drawing on the map
Basic instructions:
o We will start in the parking lot at the Red Cross where you will be given instructions for the foxhunt.
o We will divide into teams in a random fashion.
o Each team will be given a sealed envelope – make sure it stays sealed!!
o Inside this envelope will be the location of where the fox is located.
o Your job is to find the fox without reliance on these instructions.
o If you open the envelope you will receive the same points as those who do not find the fox.
o On the outside of the envelope, write the call signs of the member of your team.
o Use the names of individuals who are not licensed.
o Write the starting mileage on your vehicle to the nearest 1/10th of a mile.
o If your odometer does not support 1/10th mile increments, use your trip odometer.
o The fox will transmit on 146.46 at one minute intervals (1 minute on and one minute off)
o Determine the direction of that transmission and find the location of the fox.
o When you find the fox, record your ending mileage on the envelope (the one that is hopefully still sealed)
o You will be given instructions for a place to go so others do not see you.
o The team that finds the fox in the least amount of mileage is the winner – regardless of how long it takes (within the time limit of the hunt).
o Points will be awarded to each member of the team as follows:
Place Points
1st-----------7 This team will be the fox at the next hunt
2nd----------4
3rd-----------3
4th and up----2
DNF---------1
The Fox------3
o If you don’t find the fox by the end time of the hunt (12:00 pm) open the envelope and go to the fox.
o Points awarded will be accumulated for the season contest.
We are here to have fun. Be safe. Promote amateur radio to those who may not have their ticket yet.
Hope to see you all there !!!
